Advanced course in casino and hospitality management to attract top executives

    13/03/2014Macau Daily Times

2014-3-13 From:Macau Business   The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) has partnered with the Catholic University in Lisbon and the Kellogg School of Management in the US to offer an Advanced Program in Casino & Hospitality Management. The program is aimed at top executives. Spanning four stages and involving sessions in Lisbon, Macau and Chicago, the training course opens on May 5 and ends on July 10. Yesterday, the Associate Dean for International Relations at the Catholic University, Mr Ricardo Reis, and the Manager of USJ’s Lifelong Learning Office, Mr Emil Marques, presented the main features of the first training course that these three institutions will be jointly offering this year. The idea is to combine the management expertise from the Catholic School of Economics – a faculty often listed in the rankings compiled by the Financial Times on Executive Education – with the exponential growth of the casino and hospitality industry in Macau. According to Ricardo Reis, there’s “a lot to take in from both sides.” Macau benefits from high quality training in the management field, and those enrolling in Lisbon could also further their networking opportunities in Asia. “One of its added values is that it is customized for the local industry. Although it involves traveling to two different countries, a substantial part [of the training program] will be conducted in Macau. At the same time, it has that component of the advanced management programs, being a partnership between Catholic University and Kellogg, which is very valued in the market,” he told reporters, adding that such characteristics make it a “unique program.” Another added value Ricardo Reis pointed out is related to changing the image of the casino industry in the eyes of other industries. “They will be able to discuss their industry with people coming from other sectors; the reputation of the casino industry is a complex matter and sometimes it has to do with the ignorance of other industries.” Ricardo Reis believes that the networking opportunities will be crucial to change the casino industry’s credibility outside Macau. The application process for the advanced program, which is mainly trying to attract top executives, is now open and ends on April 16. Individual registration isn’t the only way to apply, with organizers specifically inviting casino and hospitality management executives that they think fit the profile of the course. The majority of the 50 to 60 vacancies will be designated for those residing in Macau. “We would like to have top executives enrolling in the course to maintain its networking feature,” Ricardo Reis stressed. Fully taught in English, the advanced program costs USD35,000. “It is an expensive course but has these components that have great value,” he declared. The manager of the Lifelong Learning Office at USJ, Mr Emil Marques, said yesterday that this will most likely “be the first of many other programs,” as both sides are hoping to continue this collaboration with overseas institutions, such as the Kellogg School of Management. The first week of the course, set to take place from May 5–9, will be conducted in Lisbon and focuses on matters such as economic development, strategic finance and emotional intelligence. The second week will take place in Chicago, from May 26–30, and provides sessions on global trends, negotiations and social networks, among others. The Macau stage will last for almost a month, from June 3–27, focusing on issues related to casino regulations, casino marketing and human resources. Finally, from July 7–10, another Lisbon week will be organized, with topics ranging from business ethics to surveillance and security in casinos. The Kellogg School of Management is located in Evanston, Illinois, in the United States of America, with additional campuses in Chicago and Miami. According to USJ, it is “one of the most celebrated business schools in the world, with an exceptional track record in Executive Education, and has for the last three years been the world’s number one in executive MBAs, according to a ranking compiled by the Financial Times.”   Copyright@Macau Business
